KL : Support Local Stand Up Comedy?

Last Thursday, there was this stand up comedy act at this little place with the name Little Havana right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Its the first Time Out Comedy Thursday Night of 2009 so well, of course must support a bit right?

and apparently, there were quite a number of people who thought the same way as i do. Despite the normal working stress life in Kuala Lumpur, many of the people made their time to Little Havana to attend this very session of comedy night.

before start

10 minutes after it starts

it was a packed night with 115 people attending that night.

but

Today, i won't be talking much about the acts of those who performed. I'll talk a bit more of other stuffs.

Having myself attending for just a handful of session of such act really made me think that Kuala Lumpur is an awesome place with lots of talents, though most of them needs real much practice =P. but do you know that such acts have been really welcomed by the public around the City of Kuala Lumpur and it was even pretty big in Petaling Jaya a few years back, with other stand up comedy performers.

HOWEVER, somehow sometime, those acts stop all of a sudden where cafes and bars owners stopped hiring such people to performed in their own premises. For God know what reason, there was not much support towards the local stand up comedy scene after that.

and just recently, well start from mid of year 2008, Time Out KL made an initiative to start such an event to promote and support the local scene which in my opinion is somewhat something good, at least its some side income for the performers and that's what that's encouraging them in what are they doing : STAND UP COMEDY.

I'm pretty sure most of you Malaysians will know who is Harith Iskandar or Douglas Lim right? Those who saw them performed before will mostly have a positive comment about them, but its just them..... You don't see or hear much about other name alongside these 2 personalities already as they are the very few well known personalities as a Stand Up Comedian.

What happen one day if Harith retires and decided not to entertain the public already?

So here comes the next generation of Young Comedians but before they can make it, they are really having a hard time in the local industry.

At the end of day, i'm writing all this here just to send a very simple message out, Do support local talents, of course out of your own will that is. =)

Nice one. At the risk of sounding like a complete moron, I would like to ask if this is a one-time off event or every Thursday?

Singapore also doesn't have many stand-up comedians either, but I hope that I have the to travel to KL to see such an event. Hope that you will post more of such events and we get to know about it =)

KL needs more decent stand-up comics, there's a severe lack here and a lack of support from clubs and venues too.
